During the pandemic, a ton of people escaped cities for the country, trading urban vacations for time in the great outdoors and opting for vacation homes instead of hotels. It appears as if that trend may continue: According to Expedia’s 2023 Travel Trends Report, the demand for vacation properties in the western United States — think sprawling ranches, converted farmhouses, and some seriously luxe lodges — has gone up more than 30% from September 2021 to last August.

If the glam-cowboy lifestyle appeals to you, check out these five properties recommended by Vrbo where you can book in for a rustic adventure — with all the comforts of home.

Head to Oakley, Utah — just outside Salt Lake City — to find this massive ranch located on 16 acres of sweeping scenery backgrounded by rolling hills. If something seems familiar, it’s because you might recognize it from season three of the hit television show Yellowstone, according to the property. The home sleeps 22 people in seven bedrooms, meaning the $3,495-per-night price tag can be split between large groups, making it a great destination for family reunions, yoga retreats, friend getaways and more. You can feed carrots to the horses, jump on the in-ground trampolines, or go for mountain bike rides — and the kitchen is seriously stunning. You’ll also find plenty of hiking nearby with state parks, national forests and trails within a 10-mile drive.

Double T Ranch

Get your mountain fix with this modern home in Gallatin Gateway, Montana, located between Bozeman and Big Sky. Low-slung and perfect for families or groups of friends, this three-bed, two-bath home offers gorgeous views from anywhere you find yourself on the property. Inside, there’s a luxury kitchen (or use the gas barbecue outside), and a small office space with wireless satellite internet in case the inbox calls. Ski areas are about a half-hour away, and you can drive from here to Yellowstone National Park, too.

The Horse Shoe Farm

If you’re based in the east and don’t have time to make it out to west, this North Carolina property makes for a great getaway with all the views, acreage and landscapes of ranches in Wyoming or Montana. The luxuriously appointed renovated farm on 80 green acres in Hendersonville is perfect for large retreats, with 25 bedrooms, 21 bathrooms and enough room to sleep 61 in total across five structures on the property, from small cottages to manors — guests have the ability to rent some or all of the property, depending on how big or small your getaway is. Best of all, despite its rustic feeling, this property is easy to access from Asheville Airport, Charlotte International, or Greenville.

1800's Updated Ranch House

Texas and ranches go hand-in-hand, and this Fredericksburg ranch will take you right back to the 1800s. You’ll open the door to this house and walk into an old saloon, with plenty of character inside and out that makes it perfect for large family holidays, birthday weekends and other reunions. A family-friendly bar boasts a pool table, shuffleboard, kitchenette, game table and indoor-outdoor sound system; outside, you’ll find donkeys and longhorn cattle, as well as 4 acres on which to picnic and fish.

Kabino

This 2,750-square-foot home in Alpine, Wisconsin, is perfect for pilots, who can fly into the Alpine Airpark and rent a tiedown — then simply stroll 150 yards to the property. Once there, guests will find an incredibly comfortable house equipped with all the amenities needed for a memorable stay, whether you’re coming with family for outdoor activities or as a group of friends for fly fishing. It’s also a two-hour drive to Yellowstone’s South Entrance, about 35 minutes to Jackson, just over an hour to Grand Teton National Park, a relatively short drive to horseback riding in Star Valley, and in the backyard of Snake River and the Palisades Reservoir.
