Today’s spotlight: Alyssa B. Chapital, MD, PhD, MBA

Medical director

Mayo Clinic Hospital

Dr. Chapital is an associate professor of surgery in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and also serves as the medical director for the Mayo Clinic Hospital. Dr. Chapital led the Hospital Incident Command for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lesson learned in 2020: “Nothing is impossible.  Too many times we are challenged as leaders, as humans, with situations or problems that seem unfathomable or unsolvable. Complacency was not an option during the pandemic. Committing to an audacious goal takes guts but also it inspires people to operate at the highest possible level and do great things.”

Source of pride: “I show up, do the entire job that needs to be accomplished (not just what’s being asked)  and with integrity. Whether it was a treating a patient’s diabetes, figuring out transportation, helping the nurse change a dressing or doing a fancy surgical procedure – I did and continue to do – whatever needs to be done for the best outcome.”

Surprising fact: “This Detroit-city girl started fly-fishing last year. I am completely captivated by standing in the middle of an ice-cold river, surrounded by snowcapped mountains in the middle of winter, trying to throw the perfect line. There is something so peaceful about the rhythmic toss of the line and the grace of outdoors that completes me.”
