Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions has already shown us how to tie two versions of the Purple Haze dry fly–here and here–and now he’s back with a really cool cripple/emerger version that looks super buggy. To a trout, a mayfly that can’t escape its nymphal shuck is an easy target, and these patterns often work best during a hatch.
In this video, Tim Flagler shows you how to create this cool pattern, showing off his usual tips and tricks to do it more efficiently and easily. The combo-platter nature of the fly doesn’t look very elegant, but who cares, as long as it catches fish?
Last Chance Purple Haze
Hook: Tactical dry-fly hook (here a Fulling Mill FM50), size 14.
Thread: Purple, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Tails: Moose body hair, cleaned and stacked.
Shuck: Golden brown Antron yarn.
Body: Purple rabbit-fur dubbing.
Wing: Natural white CDC.
Hackles: Brown and ginger grizzly.
