The Bradford Community Pride Lions Club is holding a toy and a purse bingo on Saturday, both to raise money for causes within the community.

Debbie Craft, first vice president of the club, explained proceeds from the event will help bring Christmas goodies to residents of local nursing homes. The events will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday for toy bingo and 6 p.m. Saturday for purse bingo, both at the Grace Lutheran Church Community Life Center.

“The doors open at noon for toy bingo,” she said. “Kids or adults can play. Some people are bringing their kids to play bingo, while some adults are coming to try to win Christmas presents.”

The toys are valued at $75 to $100, Craft said. Tickets are $15 at the door, and extra sheets can be purchased at the event.

The kitchen will be open, and hamburgers, hotdogs and chili will be sold, and pop, water and coffee will be available as well. There will be cotton candy for the kids at toy bingo, she added.

“Purse bingo starts at 6 p.m. At the door it will be $30 a ticket, Craft said. Presale tickets will be $25, and can be purchased from Craft at 814-362-6710 or from Stacy Hazlett at 814-558-1723.

Extra bingo sheets can be purchased for the purse bingo, too. The purses are valued at $250 to $300.

The purse event is BYOB, but only after 6 p.m. when the children are gone from the earlier event.

Craft said there will be a basket raffle, too. “The baskets are amazing,” she said. Businesses and restaurants donated, or sponsored baskets or prizes. “We will be selling 50/50s too.”

“All the money is going back into the community,” Craft explained. “We’re working on a Christmas project for the nursing homes, Bradford Manor, the Pavilion (at Bradford Regional Medical Center), Chapel Ridge and the Ecumenical Home.”

The students at George G. Blaisdell Elementary School are making Christmas cards, and the club is making a gift bag for each resident.

“That’s our big Christmas project,” she said.

Craft explained a few of the other community projects the club takes on throughout the year.

“We have free hotdog day, a fishing derby which is set up for June of next year at Marilla,” she said. Referring to the last derby, she said, “All the kids walked away with something and we had awards for the biggest fish.”

They are working on an educational component for next year. “We want to teach fly fishing and trapping,” she said. “We’re getting with the Game Commission about it.”

The club will be holding a food sale at 4 p.m. Nov. 20, too.

“People at the sale donate food and I take it to the pantries,” she said. “We work on hunger a lot. We’ve helped a couple of families with glasses this year, too.”
