Old Trout, Fly as a Fisherman

That is one of the lines from an internet sensation; a song by hip hop artist Old Trout titled Fly as a Fisherman. The song has created a stir on social media, especially on pages dedicated to the outdoors.

Old Trout, known to friends and family as 39 year old Joshua Castrejon, has two driving passions in life: hip hop and fishing. He’s found a way to combine both.

“I first started fishing in 1986 when I was six. My dad introduced me to fishing and as soon as I started, I could not get enough,” said Castrejon. “Now I fish everywhere I go and actually fish with new friends who hear my music and invite me to their fishing spots!”

Fly as a Fisherman is one of several songs on Old Trout’s Reel Life album. To hear more of it, follow this link. The album includes songs with titles like Go Fish, All Aboard, and I’d Rather Be on a Lake.

Castrejon lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. That’s a great location for him to exercise his fishing passions. He’s close to the fantastic fishing on the Great Lakes, but he also travels, frequently pursuing fish in saltwater.

‘My goal is to always try to catch a new species every trip if possible. It’s real easy to do when I go someplace located by the ocean.”

Old Trout has been involved in hip hop almost as long as he’s been fishing. He credits his brother-in-law who was a DJ, for getting him interested in music. He got into rhythm and beats at an early age, and started writing songs before he was a teenager.

“I’ve been writing lyrics since 1993 when I was 12. I got into hip hop sometime in the 80’s.”

The day we traded messages with Old Trout, he had just gotten off Ohio’s Maumee River where he was fishing that stream’s famous walleye run. He said he only caught two, but maybe he also caught inspiration for some new rhymes?

We won’t have to wait long to find out. Old Trout is currently working on a new album titled Caught and Released. He hopes to release it soon.
