Yellowstone Season 4 Premiere Draws Massive 8 Million Viewers

Yellowstone, starring Taylor Sheridan, has established a new series high with the Season 4 premiere, surpassing prior rating records. The premiere of Paramount Network’s flagship series, starring Oscar-winner Kevin Costner, drew an incredible 8 million total viewers in Live+Same Day on Sunday night, up a massive 104 percent over the Season 3 premiere a year ago (4.2 million). According to Nielsen statistics gathered by the network, it’s the most-watched cable series telecast since a 2018 episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead. The ad-supported Paramount Network launch also outperformed HBO’s juggernaut Game of Thrones, which drew 6.6 million L+SD viewers for its Season 4 premiere on the premium cable network.

Yellowstone’s Season 4 debut drew a new high in the crucial adults 18-49 category, with a 3.26 rating (L+SD), up 82 percent from the Season 3 premiere. The premiere outperformed the Season 3 average by a whopping 119 percent (3.26 vs. 1.49).

According to Paramount Network, the 2 million adults 18-49 and 2.9 million adults 25-54 viewers were the greatest L+SD demo viewership for an entertainment show on any network — broadcast or cable — in 2021.

The Season 4 opener received 9.5 million total viewers across four networks (Paramount Network telecasts and simulcasts on CMT, TV Land, and Pop), up to 86 percent over the Season 3 debut across the same networks (5.1 million). The total number of viewers for the full-night event, which included debuts and encores, was 11.2 million, up 69 percent from the Season 3 premiere (6.6 million).

“Taylor has created an enthralling world that our incredible cast, lead by Kevin Costner, brings to life in a way that audiences can’t get enough of,” MTV Entertainment Group president and CEO Chris McCarthy said. “We’re excited to continue our connection with Taylor and capitalize on this incredible momentum by growing out the Yellowstone brand together, as seen by the premiere figures for Yellowstone season four.”

Following the Season 3 finale, which saw John Dutton (Costner) shot and left for dead by the roadside, his daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) fired after her assistant opened a box with a bomb packed inside, and Kayce (Luke Grimes) last seen overturning his desk and returning fire as gunmen sprayed automatic weapon fire in his direction, last night’s premiere provided several shocking turns and surprises. There was also a shocking death: Josh Holloway’s character Roarke, a Time Equities executive and fly fishing enthusiast died after being bitten by a snake.

Yellowstone was co-created by Sheridan and John Linson and follows the Dutton family, led by John Dutton, who owns the United States’ largest contiguous ranch, which is constantly threatened by people who live on its borders: property developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first National Park.

101 Studios is a co-producer on Yellowstone. John Linson, Art Linson, Sheridan, Costner, David C. Glasser, and Bob Yari serve as executive producers.
