OAKDALE, NY —A women’s fishing expo hopes to introduce girls and women to fishing in one Long Island state park.
On September 24, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and New York State Parks will host the second ever Annual Long Island Women’s Fishing Expo at the Connetquot River State Park Preserve from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The free event will be run by female anglers, who will teach attendees basic and intermediate fishing skills, basic knots, fly-tying demonstrations, fly-casting instruction, and fisheries management.
“Women and girls are a vital and fast-growing part of New York’s angling and outdoor recreation community,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said in a news release.
“The Long Island Women’s Fishing Expo connects participants to the skills and knowledge necessary to have successful and enjoyable experiences outdoors and fishing, helping to inspire the next generation of anglers.”
There will also be a trout hatchery tour, marine fishing information, and free fly fishing on the Connetquot River for those 14 and older.
Women now comprise over a quarter of all anglers, according to a recent survey from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, a percent that has been slowly increasing over the years.
September 24 is also Free Fishing Day in New York State so freshwater fishing licenses will be waived that day.
