William Neil Hogan Jr. of Wheeling, 91, passed away at home on November 6, peacefully surrounded by family.

He was the son of the late W.N. Hogan Sr. and Angela McFadden Hogan.

Growing up in the Edgwood neighborhood, Bill, his brother Jimmy, and the Riley brothers were known as the “Terror of Lenox Avenue.” Bill attended local parochial schools and was a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame (’51).

In 1952 he married Mary Ann Hess of Wheeling; they had six children. He was a USAF veteran (’52-’57), serving in the Korean War and stationed in Alaska territory.

He returned to Wheeling and began a career as an Investment Broker and Bank Trust Investment Officer (’57-’71).

In 1971 Bill’s life would forever take a dramatic shift when he entered a 28-day treatment facility for alcoholism.

He married Susan Cox Nelson in 1986, his marriage proposal led them on a Peace Corp adventure to Benin, West Africa, from ’87-’91. Upon his return, he served as Development Officer for Northwood Health Systems from ’91-’98. He later continued as a financial advisor until 2015.

Bill was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1971, 49 years.

He enjoyed tennis, fly fishing, nature, writing prose and poetry, all kinds of people, especially his family, sketching them all. He had a voracious appetite for reading and a propensity for storytelling.

He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Kathleen (Mrs. Albert) Schenk, Elizabeth (Mrs. Woodward) Franzheim, James Hogan; and two daughters, Peggy and Liza.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; his four children, Neil, Tina, Brady, Andy (April) and their son Tommy, Bill’s grandson; Susan’s son, Michael (Melissa) Nelson and their children, Raina and Koa; and wonderful nieces and nephews.

He considered himself “the luckiest/most blessed (take your pick) fellow in the world.”

His greatest achievement was the incredible love and support he showed daily for all people.
