William “Buddy” Weldon Hughes, age 94 of Alvin, Texas passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2021 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Pasadena, Texas.  Buddy was born on February 8, 1927 in Gurdon, Arkansas and was a resident of Alvin for over 60 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Jean McFall Hughes; his parents, Commodore W. Hughes and wife Lou Willie Newman Hughes; his sister, Wilma Johnson Weisinger; brothers Raymond and Dewey Hughes.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Afterwards, he continued his education at Drake University in Iowa. Buddy worked for the Superior Oil Company for 33 years. Later after retirement, he worked for Bass Pro Shop Teaching Fly Fishing and Fly Tying.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Alvin. He proudly served at one time as Grand Knight of the Alvin-Manvel Knights of Columbus. He helped with the fish fries and called bingo with his fellow Knights.

Buddy and his wife loved traveling the United States in an RV. He enjoyed fly fishing in the mountains and tied his own flies for lures. He built many of his rods for bass fishing in the lakes, and enjoyed building fishing rods as gifts for the family. Buddy also enjoyed hunting ducks, pheasants and dove. He was on a bowling team and enjoyed playing golf. He was skilled in building golf clubs and especially wood crafting golf putters that he donated to many area-wide golf tournaments.

Buddy is survived by his, son, Curtis W. Hughes and wife Gay Nell Moore Hughes; grandchildren, Terri “Taffy” Krouse and husband Joel; Dedi Carson and husband Kelly; great-grandchildren, Nicole, Derek and wife Erica, and Jordan, special friend, Mary Sullivan; and numerous other relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank Winchester Lodge in Alvin and Faith Memorial Nursing Home in Pasadena for their caring dedication to our loved one.

Visitation was held from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Scott Funeral Home in Alvin with services beginning at 11:00 A.M.  Interment followed at the Confederate Cemetery in Alvin.
