If you’re fishing a nymph or a streamer, you often need to get your fly deep, where the fish are. Chances are, this means you’re going to get snagged on the bottom. One of my old fishing buddies always said, if you’re not getting snagged, you just aren’t deep enough. Here’s a useful video from Domenick Swentosky of Troutbitten, in which he explains the fundamental error many anglers make in this situation. Then, he shows you the simple way to extricate your fly 90% of the time. The key is to ensure that you’re getting your rod tip far enough upstream of the snag.
