Video: How to Use a Perfection Loop to Tie On a Fly

We’ve posted about the perfect loop several times, including the excellent video from Tightline Productions about how to tie a perfection loop at the butt end of your leader. But did you know that you can also use the same knot to tie on a fly? Many anglers like to use a loop knot for nymphs and streamers because a loop allows the fly to move more freely in the water, offering a more lifelike action. The nonslip mono loop is a good option, but some folks find it hard to master or two make with cold hands. The perfection loop is certainly easier.

When they saw me preparing this video, Tom Rosenbauer told me that he uses the perfection loop to tie on flies when he’s fishing in saltwater, and Tyler Atkins said the knot was his “secret weapon” for tying on nymphs. I like the fact that you can master a single knot and get two uses out of it. Remember: a well-tied knot is the strongest knot, so practice your perfection loop before you use it on the water.
