Caddisflies are often flying over the water in springtime, yet imitations of these adults, such as an Elk-Hair Caddis, don’t seem to work very well. But according to Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions, the trout do love to eat spent-wing caddisflies, which present an easier meal. So Tim came up with an easy-to-tie pattern that will get the job done.

          Spent Early Smoky-Winged Caddis
Hook: Standard dry-fly hook (here a Lightning Strike DF1), size 18.
          Thread: Black, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Abdomen: Brown Superfine Dry Fly dubbing.
Wings: Western Caddis Grey EP Trigger Point Fibers.
Adhesive #2: Superglue (here, Fly Tyers Z-Ment).
Thorax: Brown Superfine Dry Fly dubbing.
