The Palomino Midge was first tied by Brett Smith of Sheridan, Wyoming, for use on the famed Bighorn River. Smith used to live in Billings, and used this pattern all winter long to catch big trout on the Bighorn. Since then, the imitation of an emerging midge has proven its effectiveness around the country.
In this excellent video,Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions shows us the basic pattern, but he says that you can substitute colors and materials as you see fit. The extended body and emergent wing give the fly a lifelike silhouette that trout can’t seem to resist.
Palomino Midge
Hook: 2X-short emerger hook (here, a Dai-Riki #125), sizes 18-22.
Thread: Black, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Abdomen: Olive, black, or red Ultra Chenille, micro.
Wingcase/wing: Gray dun Antron yarn.
Thorax: Peacock herl or dubbing.
Tools: Lighter.
