The Cinnamon Ant has long been one of my “go-to” patterns, from May through September, so I was excited to see that Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions featured the fly in this week’s video. As usual, Tim’s version of the fly is better than mine, although can you believe how ungracefully he trims that wing material? (/snark) Also as usual, Tim shows you the best way to manage the materials, making the tying process both simple and elegant. The resulting pattern will float well, is easy to see, and will certainly bring trout to the surface.
Cinnamon Flying Ant
Hook: Standard dry-fly hook (here, a Dai-Riki #305), size 18.
Thread: Burnt Orange, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Body: Orange cylindrical soft foam, size small.
Wing: White polypropylene yarn.
Legs: Brown hackle, trimmed on the bottom.
Note: You can color the underside of the body with brown marker.
