Here’s the latest installment in our series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video will teach a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.

Lots of fly tiers like to use half-hitch knots to save their work or to finish off the fly’s head. As usual, Tim has a better, faster way to do this, which will be especially useful for those tiers who like to keep their scissors in their hand. By wrapping the thread around the closed scissor blades and then guiding the loop over the eye of the hook, Tim makes a perfect half-hitch every time. By using a reverse half-hitch, followed by a regular one, you can make the knot even more robust.
