Here’s the latest installment in our series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video will teach a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.

When you’re cutting fly-tying materials into thin strips–especially if you want to prepare for a bunch of flies–accuracy and consistency are the keys. If you cut well, your flies won’t be variable and you won’t waste any material. Here, Tim demonstrates his favorite methods for cutting a variety of materials from the smallest all the way up to large foam sheets. These tricks will save you a lot of time and frustration.
