In the summer of 2018, I traveled to northeastern Saskatchewan to Wollaston Lake Lodge to fish for big northern pike. (See “Armed to the Teeth.”) At dinner on the first night, we met our tablemate, a woman named Mary Pettigrew, who was fishing alone for a week before her family joined her. Not only was Mary obviously a hardcore angler, but she was charming and hilarious, as well. Every meal was full of laughs and good stories.

The film “Common Thread” focuses on Mary’s love of fly fishing and how it has helped create close bonds among all the members of her family–old and young, male and female. The sport clearly means so much to Mary, and it is inspiring and moving to watch her and her brother pass on their love to the next generations. In this season when families traditionally get together, but many of us are unable to, it is heartwarming to see how Mary’s family finds connection through fishing. The smile on that young girl’s face when she finally hooks up will melt your heart.
