The final fishing report for 2020 comes from Almanor Fishing Association Dec. 27. Almanor lake level continues to rise ever so slightly. There is snow on the ground at lake level and roadways are slick. Morning temps Are dipping into the low teens with chances of snow later in the week. Water temps are in the low 40s and visibility varies throughout the lake from 5-9’.
“We caught fish right off the dam all the way along the East Shore up to Dorado,” said John Crotty of Almanor Fishing Association. “The majority of the fish we caught were smaller with a few quality fish in the mix.”
Crotty also caught a few fish from the Peninsula to the A-Frame. “We were mixing up baits, speeds and depth, the top fifteen feet of the water column was the most productive,” he said. “Pond smelt pattern gulps, hot orange (Jay Fair) trolling flies and rapala’s all caught fish. Gulps at 1 mph, flies at 1.7 (with wiggle discs) and rapala’s up to 2 mph.” Speedy shiners at 2.5-3 mph should also catch fish this time of year.
Fishing pressure remains light from boaters. Fishermen are beginning to see some bigger fish in the coves as both fly and bank fishermen picked up some quality fish this past week. The Canyon Dam boat ramp is open and cleared of snow. The ramp gets very slick from water dripping off boat trailers; Crotty advised boaters to exercise caution with the freezing temps.
