Memorial Day – The Ukiah Daily Journal

* Memorial Day tends to herald the beginning of the summer season with barbecues, beaches, and the first sunburn of the season, the “holiday” is truly a day for mourning and honoring the military members who have fought and died for our freedom.

President Theodore Roosevelt said, “We must dare to be great; and we must realize that greatness is the fruit of toil and sacrifice and high courage.”—

Lake Pillsbury- The road coming from Potter Valley is still very dumpy.  Take it easy and the trip will be just fine.  The lake is full.   Although I have not fished Pillsbury lately, I have received reports that the trout and bass fishing has continued to be good.  The most successful trout anglers have been trolling the west side pulling a Ford Fender trailing it with a salmon egg and a kernel of sweet corn.

The bass have moved up in to the flats from the deeper water to spawn.  Look for them to be holding at drop-offs.

Clear Lake –   For the past month, the wind, and then with one day of clouds, and then five days of the temperatures being in the 60’s & 70’s, the bass have been somewhat confused.  At least that is the excuse many anglers have been using.  With that being said, there are still many willing bass to be caught.  Successful fishermen have been flipping a weightless Senko under docks or drop-shottin’ a Roboworm along the weed lines. Boy, now that the warmer weather has kicked in, the top water frog bite has started up.  It’s one of mine and Teresa’s favorite ways to fish.

Cat fishermen have been doing best,  fishing a live medium sized crawdad with a bobber.  Rodman’s Slough, Cache Creek, the submersed tires west of Lucerne, and Shag Rock are all areas that have produced catfish.

Lake Mendocino -“ NEWS FLASH! “  The Corps of Engineers still has not opened the south boat ramp. Yup, yet another fine example of our tax dollars at work….

Blue Lakes- The trout fishing on the Upper Blue Lake has been good.  With the anglers on the water trolling doing the best.  In the morning hours, the trout have been up close to the water surface (trolling with a Cast-master has been working well).  Later in the day, the trout have been moving down into the deeper water (set your down rigger at 20 to 25 feet).  Try an action disk, chasing it with a plastic worm or fly.  The gang that fish from the shore along Hwy. 20 or off the docks have also done very well.  Try using Powerbait or blowing up a worm.

Lake Sonoma-  The bass fishing on Sonoma Counties premier fishing lake has really picked up as of late. Many of the bass have moved up into the shallows staged and ready to spawn. Plastics have been the ticket. (Sweet beavers, brushhogs and senkos have been working well) Let them free fall down to the bottom and then slowly twitch them along. Concentrate on areas that have submersed trees or any structure in a creek channel. The fish are in 3 – 10 feet of water. Pay close attention to your line.  Sometimes you won’t even feel the bite. Also the catfishing has really turned on.

* One down, two to go! The first of the major summer holidays is upon us.  With of the busy-ness of our water ways during the summer months, the best times to fish will be early in the morning and the last two hours of daylight.  Remember to be safe and to always watch out for the other guy.  They aren’t watching out for you.
