The following summer events are planned in the area:

Open house

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office will hold an open house at its new facility on North Main Street in Woodstock from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday and 1-4 p.m. on Sunday.

Gardens tour

Five Shenandoah County gardens will be featured in the Gardening in the Valley Tour from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. They include the Edinburg Mill biofiltration garden, Country Farm, Monarchs on Meadow, In Town Yard and Veatch’s Gleann Arboretum.

Master Gardeners will be available at each site to point out educational features, and a staffed information table will be available at several locations. Held rain or shine. No pets allowed. Some areas may not be handicap accessible, as they are private properties.

Proceeds of the tour will benefit the construction of a Peace Pavilion at the Corhaven Graveyard.

Community garden

The Strasburg Community Garden is hosting children’s activities led by members of the Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardeners Association at 10 a.m. on Saturday at 295 Park Road. Saturday’s program will be on composting. Registration is limited to 10 children.

Future activities will be held July 10 on pollinators, July 24 on wind chimes in the garden, Aug. 14 on attracting butterflies, Aug. 28 on insect safari, Sept. 11 on nature weaving, Sept. 25 on leaf and flower prints, Oct. 9 on making a bird feeder and Oct. 23 on putting the garden to bed.

Spitler reunion

The Spitler family reunion will be held starting at noon on Sunday at the Stoney Creek Brethren Church shelter in Mount Jackson. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish, drinks and utensils.

Fly fishing workshops

Shenandoah Reel Women on the River will offer fly fishing workshops for young women ages 12-18 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday through July 1 and July 6 to 8 at the Seven Bends State Park in Woodstock.

Girls will learn the art of fly fishing, knot tying, appropriate equipment, entomology, casting techniques and how to read the water like a fish. Rods, reels and necessary equipment will be available for participants to use.

Summer Jam Festival

Massanutten Resort, east of Harrisonburg, has announced the return of its popular Summer Jam Festival from 5-10 p.m. on July 3. Featured will be live music, kids’ activities, wine and beer options, food trucks and fireworks. Proceeds from the festival will benefit the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA.

Kevin Davis & BanCaribe will open the night with soulful Caribbean original arrangements followed by Red Dirt Revolution from 6:45 to 8 p.m. and Kanye Twitty to cap off the evening. A fireworks display will begin at 10 p.m., set off from the Massanutten Peak.

Strasburg Museum

The Strasburg Museum will be open during Mayfest with free admission on July 3. Featured will be an auction at 9 a.m. and children’s activities. There will only be 50 Eberly vases available to purchase for $30.

4-H day camp

Shenandoah County 4-H will host Day Camp in a Box July 13-15 for ages 5-8 and July 20-23 for ages 9-12.

Shenandoah Voices

The Shenandoah County Library in Edinburg has launched its Shenandoah Voices Oral History Project, a project designed to document the history of our communities and those who live in them.

Community drive

United Way Northern Shenandoah Valley is holding its annual community baby shower to collect needed items for the new Baby Care Package program.

The following items are needed: small laundry baskets, petroleum jelly, safety outlet plugs, baby body wash, baby shampoo, baby lotion, diapers for newborn or size 1, diaper rash cream, receiving blankets, baby bath towels and washcloths, plastic bath books and baby wipes.
