Steve Kenyon
March 9, 1957 – December 25, 2021
O’Fallon, Illinois – Steve Curtis Kenyon, age 64, of O’Fallon, Ill., born March 9, 1957 in Wellsboro, Penn., passed unexpectedly on December 25, 2021 at his home.
Growing up in small-town Mansfield, Pennsylvania instilled strong core values in Steve that would guide him for the rest of life. He graduated from Penn State University and later Ohio State University, and thus began a long and successful career as a Geodetic Scientist. Steve was well-respected in his work, and built strong international relationships with colleagues. He was fortunate to have had the opportunities to travel far and wide, leaving him with a deep appreciation of the beauty of our world, which he eagerly shared with those around him. When facing a challenge, Steve saw it as an opportunity to learn, an obstacle to overcome to achieve a mutual goal. He was rarely one to back down from a difficult situation, and met it head-on, and with a smile. He had retired in 2016 from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in St. Louis, Missouri.
Although he valued his work, he most enjoyed being outdoors hiking, especially at Yellowstone National Park, fly fishing on the Missouri River and camping with his family on western vacations. Always planning, he would map out the best itineraries for the day, making sure to hit the best sights and catch the greatest views. Steve enjoyed the legacy of Lewis and Clark, and family vacations also followed the historical points of the Voyage of Discovery. He was an avid cyclist and spent many hours riding the trails in southern Illinois and eastern Missouri. Riding his bicycle on MCT and a hike in the woods with his wife and dog, were the simple pleasures that he loved the most. Steve was genuinely a good person, who valued the friendships of his youth and the friendships of his later years, as one in the same. He loved a good book and a lively conversation with friends. He could often be found reading and always wanted to learn more about the world and expand his knowledge, which he shared readily with those closest to him. He was a dedicated father, a loving husband, and a friend to those around the globe.
Survivors include his wife, Maryjane, nee Colleton, Kenyon, whom he met through their mutual work, and he married April 26, 1986; his daughter Melanie Kenyon, and son Andrew Kenyon; his mother Joanne Horton; his father Jack Kenyon; his brothers Dave and Bruce; and his niece Karla and nephews Ryan and Darius.
