What books have you read and recommended to others that influence your leadership style and how you’ve developed your career?

One of my all-time favorites is Stephen Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” Three habits in particular have had significant impact: Think Win-Win, Begin with the End in Mind, and Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. They are timeless and applicable in so many situations and all aspects of life.

Through being a member of EO (Entrepreneur’s Organization), I was exposed to Verne Harnish’s “Mastering the Rockefeller Habits,” which has been updated with his book “Scaling Up.” I’ve implemented the RH framework to help grow organizations I’ve led, both for-profit and nonprofit. I continue to use it today as I provide leadership coaching for CEOs looking to scale their businesses.

“The Power of Moments” by Chip and Dan Heath is a powerful reminder of the opportunity and value of creating extraordinary moments and memories for your employees and family members.

What books have you recently read for pleasure that you’re telling others about?

The past 2.5 years have been a time of deep personal reflection for me. Two books that have been especially important during this journey are “The Untethered Soul” by Michael Singer and “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle.

Most recently, I read “The Politics Industry” by co-authors Michael Porter (a well-known business strategist and author) and Katherine Gehl. I am distraught with the ever-increasing divisiveness in politics and constant power grabs by both parties. This book offers practical reforms to reverse the damaging current trajectory of our political system.

What is next on your to-read list?

I’ve gotten into fly fishing over the past year and have just started Thomas McGuane’s “The Longest Silence,” a series of short stories about the author’s various fly fishing outings across the world. It’s funny, philosophical and encouraging!
