In this week’s typically fun how-to video from Ben Sittig, a.k.a Huge Fly Fisherman, he offers a single, quick tip that will make you a better angler. Whenever you’re stripping a fly–whether it’s a streamer on a trout stream, a nymph on a lake, or a shrimp pattern on the tropical flats–you want to keep your rod tip low. This ensures that there is no slack between your stripping hand and the fly, allowing you to quickly detect strikes and set the hook immediately. Some folks like to put the rod tip in the water, as a way to guarantee that they’re not getting lazy and allowing the rod tip to move upward.

By keeping your rod tip low, you ensure a direct connection to the fly.
