The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education has resumed public programs, and has a line-up of nature-themed and outdoor programs in November.
The programs are free, but space is limited to ensure social distancing. Participants must register online in advance.
• Salamanders: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 2. Learn to identify local species of salamanders and their habitat requirements, and why they are so important to our ecosystems. Ages 8 to 12.
• Intro to Fly Fishing: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 12 or Nov. 16. Learn the basics of fly fishing with equipment provided. Ages 12 and up.
• Casting: 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 6. Topics include casting theory, mechanics and practice techniques. Equipment provided. Ages 12 and up.
• Primitive Outdoor Skills for Families: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10. Learn to survive if lost in the woods. Ages 10-15.
• Compass: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 12. Whether you are on a hunt, out fishing, or exploring the forest, learn how to navigate your way with a compass. Open to ages 10 and older.
• Nature Nuts: Raising Trout: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 18. Ages 4-7.
• Eco Explorers: Tracking: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18. Ages 8-12.
• Habitat Hike: 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 20. Take a moderate 2-mile hike and learn about various forest habitats and the wildlife that call them home, including mountain coves and a former beaver pond. Ages 8 and up.
