MURRIETA, CA — A beloved baseball coach and teacher who influenced thousands of students across Murrieta, Temecula and beyond has died following a 19-month cancer battle. He was 64.

Glenn David Legg — or “Dave” as he was known to family and friends — passed away Nov. 15 at home in Ennis, Montana, with his wife by his side.

Legg came to Southwest Riverside County as a coach for Linfield Christian School and Temecula Valley High School before becoming the head baseball coach at the newly built Vista Murrieta High School. He was a two-time league Coach of the Year and won 115 games, including VMHS’s first CIFSS State Championship in 2007 with a thrilling 1-0 11th-inning victory over Camarillo High School at Dodger Stadium. In addition to developing the VMHS baseball program, Legg coached Broncos cross-country for two years.

His coaching prowess was matched by his teaching skills. Legg was a standout physical education teacher in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. He was first hired at Shivela Middle School and positively influenced thousands of middle-school kids before being tapped as one of the founding/planning teachers for the new VMHS campus that opened in 2003.

Legg also served as a baseball coach at San Diego State University and the University of Wyoming. He taught the game to NCAA champions, future professional ballplayers, and even an MLB Hall of Famer.

Legg and his wife, Melinda, moved to Montana in 2011, where he coached the Bozeman Bucks American Legion team for five seasons. He traveled across the state and Canada, shaping the young men of Bozeman along the way.

Most recently, Legg served as an assistant baseball coach at Corban University in Salem, Oregon, coaching alongside his son, Derek, the team’s head coach.

After a long career in college athletics, Legg began entering marathons and triathlons. He competed in four Ironman triathlons, his last at age 60.

Legg loved to golf, especially with sons Cody, DC and Derek, and his father-in-law, Clark. He recorded a hole-in-one at the Stoneridge Golf Course in Blanchard, Idaho, in 2020.

But the activity that brought him the most enjoyment throughout his life was fly fishing. Retiring to Montana allowed him to pursue trout on the Madison River and the state’s other pristine waterways.

The last few years of Legg’s life were spent substitute teaching at Ennis schools, where his wife teaches mathematics. The couple enjoyed having lunch together, helping Ennis students achieve their academic goals, and attending Ennis sporting events.

An adored teacher and coach for more than 40 years in California, Wyoming, Oregon and Montana, Legg was born May 12, 1957, in San Diego to parents Glenn Ronald Legg and Patsy Marion Halvorson. He graduated from Kearny Senior High School in San Diego in 1975. There he played football and baseball as a Kearny Komet. He attended San Diego Mesa College and earned his associate degree in 1977. In 1980, he received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from San Diego State University.

Legg loved Jesus Christ first and foremost, and his faith gave him strength and comfort during his cancer battle, his family said. He is survived by his father Glenn Ronald of Grand Junction, Colorado; his adoring wife of 33 years, Melinda; sons DC (David Clark) of Bozeman, Montana, and Derek of Turner, Oregon; DC’s wife, Keithen; Derek’s wife, Karisa; and six grandchildren — Riley Renee, Nash Cal, Hayes David, Kodi Raine, Nuallan Rodman Clark, and Shiloh Brooks.
