Named after the Cherokee word for “haven of rest,” Chetola Resort has long been a favorite getaway for outdoor activities. Located on 78 wooded acres in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, this historic manor house was once the home of J. Luther Snyder, who purchased the estate in 1926. Known as the Coca-Cola King of the Carolinas, Snyder was a successful salesman. He began his career selling soda from a one-horse wagon, eventually operating multiple Coca-Cola bottling plants in the Charlotte area. Snyder and his wife loved to entertain and held numerous extravagant parties at the estate that were the talk of Blowing Rock in the 1930s and ‘40s.

Historic Bob Timberlake Inn Since

1997, Rachael Renar and her son Kent Tarbutton have owned Chetola Estate and continue to retain the historic charm of its day. Now an elegant Bed and Breakfast, the Chetola’s Manor House features eight guest rooms, each named for those who played an integral part in its history. All are complete with a fireplace and whirlpool tub, and most rooms have lake views.

By tapping internationally known artist and designer Bob Timberlake, the owners have created an authentic sense of place. Timberlake built a reputation and brand for the way he captured the simple lifestyle in his native state of North Carolina – and you’ll find it here. From the décor to the restaurant menu, the artist’s design influence is evident at every turn.

Timberlake personally selected each piece of furniture, art, and accessories for the guest rooms, which blends the artist’s distinctive hand-crafted spirit and casual yet elegant style with design touches reflecting the 1920s through the 1940s.

On the third floor, a private library offers a large leather sofa by a roaring fire – a perfect spot for a good book and an after-dinner sip. This, along with exclusive amenities like a personal pantry, daily wine and cheese socials, fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies nightly, complimentary made-to-order breakfast, and a private parlor, are a few of the special details that take this inn experience to another level.

North Carolina-Inspired Fare

Executive chef Matt Rivers steers the menu at Timberlake’s Restaurant, where you’ll find dishes inspired by some of the artist’s favorites, like roasted Carolina quail and sweet tea brined pork ribeye with blackberry gastrique and peach chutney.

Warm-up with the comforts of an outside firepit to enjoy one of Pastry Chef Candace Hagaman’s treats, like her famous salted caramel s’mores dip – a delicious take on the campfire classic.

For great craft brews, casual cocktails and snacks, and local music, a lively gastropub, Headwaters Pub, is located adjacent to the restaurant.

Mountain Fun

With full access to the Spa at Chetola, the Sporting Reserve and Clubhouse, and golf privileges at the private Hound Ears 18-hole course, Chetola has it all for outdoor enthusiasts. Orvis-endorsed fly-fishing guide services are available on-site as well as sporting clays and instruction on a private reserve located on 67 additional acres. For hikers, adjacent access to Moses Cone Memorial Park offers 27 miles of trails across 3,500 acres bordering the Blue Ridge Parkway.
