The Purcell Public Library will host “Behind the Story: Author Talk with Hernan Diaz” from 8-9 p.m. on Thursday, September 29.

Join library staff for an evening with Pulitzer Prize finalist and PEN/Faulkner Award winner Hernan Diaz, author of In the Distance and Trust.

Diaz holds a Ph.D. from NYU and edits, the Spanish-language journal Revista Hispánica Moderna, at Columbia University.

Diaz’s new book, Trust, is set during the roar of the 1920s around the Wall Street tycoon Benjamin Rask and his wife, Helen. Together, they have risen to the top of the world of seemingly endless wealth–all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end.

But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Hernan Diaz’s Trust elegantly puts these competing narratives into conversation with one another—and in tension with the perspective of one woman bent on disentangling fact from fiction.

The result is a novel that spans over a century and becomes more exhilarating with each new revelation.

This is a virtual program and registration with an email address is required by calling 405-527-5546 or online at pioneerlibrarysystem.org.

This is a really good dip recipe and easy too!

Addictive Crab Dip

12 ounces cream cheese softened, 1 ½ blocks

6 green onions finely chopped

5 tablespoons mayonnaise ¼ cup plus 1 tablespoon

2 6-ounce cans crabmeat 12 ounces total, drained

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese or shredded mozzarella, divided

Sliced green onions for garnish

Crackers, chips, celery, or crostini for serving

Preheat oven to 350°.

In a medium bowl, combine the cream cheese, onion, mayonnaise, crabmeat, garlic powder, salt, and ½ of shredded cheese. Stir until very well combined.

Spread into a small 6-inch cast-iron skillet or 1 quart baking dish. Top with other ½ cup cheese.

Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven or until bubbly.

Turn broiler on and broil until cheese on top is browned in spots.

Remove from oven and let sit 5-10 minutes before serving. The dip will be very hot.
