The 23rd Annual Gene Doyle Fishing Tournament, which will forever be known as The Gene Doyle COVID Virtual Fishing Tournament, will be held Oct. 1-20, with fishing wherever registered anglers choose to fish. Registration is required, but there is no fee to participate in this catch and release virtual tournament. Prizes will be awarded following review of photos from contestants, to be uploaded to the tournament website, www.genedoyle.org.

Registered anglers will fish in four divisions: Youth – 15 and under, Adult, Fly Fishing, and Captains. Prizes will be awarded in each division for Largest Snook, Largest Redfish, Largest Trout, and Largest Largemouth Bass, in addition to prizes for Best Photograph, Trash Can Slam, and “Most Outstanding Fish Ever Caught,” which asks anglers to submit any photo of any fish they have caught in their lifetime for consideration for the most outstanding catch. Every registered angler will also be entered into a drawing to win an entry into the 24th Annual Gene Doyle Fishing Tournament, which has been scheduled for April 16-18, 2021.

The Annual Gene Doyle Fishing Tournament benefits the Gene Doyle Memorial Foundation, a 501c3 organization that awards adventure scholarships to Collier County high school students. The Gene Doyle Tournament Committee and the Gene Doyle Memorial Foundation have expressed their thanks to the anglers, sponsors and volunteers who have supported the tournament for more than two decades now. In this spirit, this year’s virtual tournament has no entry fee and will be unique as angers look for safe ways to do what they love during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“For 22 years the anglers and sponsors of the Gene Doyle Fishing Tournament have helped support the adventures of over 70 young people through the Gene Doyle Adventure Scholarships,” said Robin Doyle, father of Gene. “Along the way we have had great fun and taken a lot of young people fishing with us. In 2005 we were interrupted by Hurricane Wilma and this year by COVID-19. But fishing is too important to all of us to let the virus knock us off the water.” Complete rules and registration information are available on the website www.genedoyle.org. ¦
