This month, on Tuesday, Jan. 25, live at Stonegate Country Club and via Zoom webinar, the Fly Fishers of Davis will hear from Jon Martin, who will cover seasonal target species of both the Feather and Yuba Rivers.

He will cover, in brief, fly angling tactics for trout, steelhead, and shad as well as relevant equipment, flies, access points, river safety and other local tidbits. The presentation will focus primarily on winter and spring/early summer angling opportunities so that attendees will be able to use the guidance to enhance their angling experiences in the months to come.

Growing up in Sacramento, Martin used to fish as a youngster when his parents took trips to the Sacramento Delta or up to the Sierras where they camped every summer. He still has a vivid memory of his first bluegill and watching his bobber disappear under the water like magic and his first mountain trout caught on a salmon egg. He also remembers the day he decided he needed to try fly fishing.

Martin was sitting on a log that spanned the river with a camping buddy, and they had been trying to catch two large planters all morning, throwing lures and bait to no avail. They were frustrated and getting bored. Martin saw the fly line first, whipping through the trees around the the bend in the river and was mystified. Then a nice gentleman clad in fly fishing regalia approached their log and said hello. They proceeded to disclose their dilemma with the two unreasonable trout.

He asked if he could have a go, and with a few flicks of an Adams and a brief tussle he had brought both trout to hand. He gave them to the pair to take home to the campfire then disappeared downstream. Martin’s dad had an old Fenwick fiberglass rod lying around in the garage and the rest is history.

Martin has fly fished the Northern California area for the last 25 years — he believes he has learned a thing or two. Having decided that he had caught enough fish for a lifetime, he figured he should share his passion for the sport with others.  This sport, steeped in history and tradition, is very special to Martin as are the people, rivers and fish that he encounters on his outings.

His goal is to share the joy of the outdoors and fly angling with anyone who cares to listen. Martin is a trout and steelhead angler 75 percent of the time, but also enjoys warm and salt water angling when opportunities present themselves. He looks forward to enriching your angling experience in Northern California and beyond.
