VIDE0S: Lighting up World Series Park in Saugus

The much anticipated, long awaited finishing touch on Saugus’ crown jewel of baseball diamonds for the past 17 years was officially dedicated on Friday night, Oct. 8, with an evening of music and food for the 170 donors of the World Series Park lighting project.

The ageless wonder Bob Davis, the park’s superintendent, spearheaded the overall park project way back in 2003 to help commemorate the Saugus American Little League all-star team’s run to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. They culminated that memorable summer as a finalist in the United States championship game.

Davis presided over the historic occasion after years of hard work to make night games possible for Saugus High School, not to mention Saugus Babe Ruth, regional Babe Ruth and legion tournaments and men’s leagues.

Howie Conley’s Memory Laners entertained the donors. They sang a variety of popular songs before the unveiling of the plaque behind the third base dugout that has all of their names engraved on it. The food was provided by Kowloon’s, Prince Pizzeria, Harrow’s Chicken Pies, Soc’s Ice Cream and Border Café.

But the night belonged to the donors that ultimately made night games possible at the popular baseball venue. The lighting project’s donors are in no particular order: Win Waste Innovations, Exelon Generation, Shirley Bogdan, Vincent Purpura, Saugus Babe Ruth, McGovern Family, Bob and Carol Long, Freehling family, Webster First Federal Credit Union, George Bernazani, Riley family, Northeast Babe Ruth League, Margret and Carl Jackson, Canes Northeast Baseball, Cotreau family, Monette Cotreau, Irontown Diner, Minuteman Security, Walter Bentson, Pearle Vision, Water Works Lawn Sprinklers, Joey LoRusso Memorial Fund.
