NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -On Dec. 4, Birdwood Lake was restocked with roughly 3,000 trout. The trout were raised from eggs to be about ten inches each. Trout stocking helps conserve the natural population that is in the waters.
Trout are easy to catch,” said Fish Production Manager Julie Fraley. “It is easy to bring little kids out here and have them catch a fish and we might get a future fisherman out of that.”
Fraley raises the trout from the eggs until they get to their intended size before releasing them into the waters. Fraley is the first woman to hold the position of Fish Production Manager in Nebraska in the commission’s history.
“I knew I was always going to make history. I just didn’t know how,” said Fraley.
Since the pandemic began, the Nebraska Parks and Game Commission have witnessed an increase in their fishing licenses and park passes in Nebraska.
As they continue to restock the lake, they encourage people to come out and fish.
“Go buy a cheap pole at Wal-Mart it doesn’t have to be the most expensive fly fishing pole,” said Fraley. “It can be the $10 pole at Wal-Mart. Grab some rooster tails and throw ‘em out there reel them and see what comes in.”
They plan on restocking the lake with more trout again next week.
