May 1: Kids Fishing Derby

ORANGE — The Orange Gun Club will hold a kids fishing derby at 357 West River St., Sunday, May 1, starting at 9 a.m., for kids up to age 14. Free. Food, prizes and fun.

May 3: Tutors orientation for Literacy Volunteers of Orange/Athol

ATHOL — If you are interested in making a significant difference in the life of someone who wants to improve their reading skills, please come to the Athol Public Library on May 3, room 107, at 6 p.m. for an introduction to our program. Literacy Volunteers of Orange/Athol serves local area adults in the North Quabbin region. We offer free training and support. The library is at 568 Main St.

Saturday: Monadnock Tristate Dance Club

WINCHESTER, N.H. — The Monadnock Tristate Dance Club will hold a dance on Saturday, April 23, 7 to 10:30 p.m., at the ELMM Community Center, 21 Durkee St., Winchester, N.H. Live music by: The Dan Morgan Band. Refreshments served, 50/50 raffle.

April 25: Golden Age Club meeting

ATHOL — The Athol Golden Age Club will hold a business meeting on April 25 at the Athol Senior Center at 1 p.m. This month, the club is meeting on the fourth Monday of the month since April 18 is Patriot’s Day.

Our guest speaker will be Mr. Bob Curley, the president of the North Quabbin Trails Association, who will speak about hiking/nature trails in our area that are available to all of us.

The Athol Golden Age Club is open to all senior citizens in the North Quabbin, 55 or over. Its purpose is threefold: to promote “re-creation” through challenging programs, friendship through regular meetings, and leisure activities such as the popular senior bus trips.

Fridays: Early bird birding with Jeff Johnstone

ATHOL — Friday April 22, 29, and May 6, 13, 20, at 7 a.m., “Early Bird Birding with Jeff Johnstone.” Join Johnstone at the Environmental Center (100 Main St., Athol) before heading out to explore the North Quabbin area for spring migrant birds. These are great events for the novice birder to learn from one of our best field naturalists. Come for as long as your schedule allows. Severe weather cancels. Info: Jeff Johnstone, 978-249-9052. April 23: Green Clean Athol

ATHOL — The Green Clean Athol Spring Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, April 23. “We’re urging people to do their neighborhood. People are encouraged to show up at Lord Pond Plaza the morning of the event. Heidi Strickland said, “This year we’re going to have a map, and if people need a place to go, we will designate a place and hand them a map.”

April 23: ‘Earth Rhythms’

NEW SALEM — On Saturday, April 23, 11 a.m., the New Salem Public Library will present “Earth Rhythms: Songs for the Environment” with local musician and storyteller, Roger Tincknell. The program will be held outside (weather permitting) and is sponsored in part by a grant from the New Salem Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. April 24: Alley Music

ORANGE — You are invited to Stage on Main (17 South Main St., Orange) to meet the Alley Music (Myra MacLeod) group and listen to their music on Sunday, April 24, 2 to 3 p.m. Masks will be required. April 22-24: Fly-fishing show

MARLBOROUGH — Columnist Mike Roche tells us, “The Fly-Fishing Show, which boomed when that sport had a growth spurt, has just announced a change in dates and will be held at the Marlborough Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade Center April 22-24. Local fly fishermen have always enjoyed this show, produced by a group that holds similar events across the country, as the latest equipment and many exciting destinations are always part of the lure as are the many interesting seminars.”

May 12: ‘A Musical Journey’

ATHOL — On Thursday, May 12, the Athol Council on Aging will host singer/entertainer Tommy Rull, who will perform his show “A Musical Journey Through The Years.” Lunch begins at noon with the show to follow. Reservations and tickets are required by May 5 by calling 978-249-8986. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Athol Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

May 7: Hike Mt. Grace

WARWICK — The 22nd annual Ned Green Scholarship Fund Memorial Hike will take place Saturday, May 7, 10 a.m. to noon. Meet at Oscar Ohlson parking lot, base of Mt. Grace, opposite Highway Garage Road in Warwick.

Come prepared with tick awareness, water, snacks, sturdy shoes. Severe weather cancels event.

May 11: ABNC meeting in person and on Zoom

ATHOL — On Wednesday, May 11, 7 p.m., “Bat, Falcon, Social Flycatcher oh my!” an Athol Bird and Nature Club presentation, will be held in person and on Zoom.

Club member Ernie Leblanc will guide attendees on a recap of a whirlwind and successful adventure in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

May 14: Vendor and tag sale

ORANGE — On Saturday, May 14, St. Mary’s Women’s Club will host a Vendor and Tag Sale in the Parish Center on Cheney and West Myrtle streets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vendors should contact Emily White at 774- 254-7500 or on the St. Mary’s Women’s Club Facebook page to reserve a spot and a table. Vendors to date include Scentsy, Pampered Chef, Color Street Nail Polish, Thirty-one Bags, Pet Tags, Perfectly Posh Pampering, and Wreaths and Door Décor. The Women’s Club will offer coffee, tea and cinnamon buns in the morning, and will operate a 50/50 raffle and a small tag sale table with proceeds reverting to the club. Tables with religious books and children’s books will also be included.

May 19: J.R. Greene on Calvin Coolidge

GARDNER — The Gardner Museum presents Athol author J.R. Greene and his newest book (“Calvin Coolidge in 100 Objects,” published fall 2021) about the man who graduated from Amherst College and went on to lead the nation as the 30th president of the US. It is J.R. Greene’s 23rd book and fourth pertaining to Calvin Coolidge.

You will be able to purchase a signed copy of his book. Seven to 8 p.m. after a museum-hosted reception from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Admission for non-members is $3. Reservations required: Call 978-632-3277 or email info@gardnermuseuminc.com.
