Dr. Alejandro (Alex) Horochowski, a general surgeon in Sedalia from 1976-1993, died at his home in Los Molles, Argentina on Thursday, April 28, 2022. He was 86 years old.
He was born May 25, 1935, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the son of immigrant Ukrainian parents, Demetrio Horochowski and Olga Dwornicka. After completing medical school, he traveled to St. Louis, MO in 1961 to do a residency in surgery, transferring to the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, Missouri a year later. He married his childhood sweetheart Sara Laura Maria Ucha who joined him in Missouri where their three daughters were born. The family returned to Argentina in 1966. Alex worked as a surgeon at the regional hospitals in General Güemes, Salta and Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut. At the latter, he became head of surgery. He impacted the lives of many children by creating a program of host families to assist rural low-income families whose children required cleft-lip surgery, while training a group of surgeons in the procedure. His son Leo was born in Argentina before the family returned to Columbia, Missouri in 1975, on the heels of a military coup.
Back in the States, Alex renewed his medical license and bought out a private practice in Sedalia, Missouri. Alex’s curiosity and capacity to learn was broad. He enjoyed fly fishing and took his growing family on camping adventures in Patagonia. He learned analog black and white photography and built a darkroom where he developed his own negatives and prints, winning awards at the Sedalia State Fair. He learned to fly in Warrensburg and received his pilot license in 1989. He enjoyed classical music and supported the orchestra, played tennis, and did woodworking. He also bought a hobby farm, near Windsor, where he spent weekends planting trees, riding horses, and taking care of a few cows. Patients and acquaintances called him Dr. H or Dr. Alex.
In 1993, he fulfilled a lifetime dream of acquiring a ranch and relocated to Los Molles, Córdoba, Argentina. Here, he and his second wife, Nancy, renovated and expanded a 100-year-old adobe home. He raised cattle for seven years, eventually transitioning all his energies onto his olive orchard, whose olives were pressed at the local refinery, Olium. In visits to the United States, he always gifted his children the coveted, fruity, and vibrant olive oil.
Alex is survived by his four children, Laura Horochowski (m. Eric Orrill), Katerina (Nina) Horochowski, Alejandra (Alexa) Horochowski, Leonardo (Leo) Horochowski (m. Kyla McCain), and grandchildren Brianna and Isaac Orrill, and Soleil and Rio Horochowski.
In remembrance of Dr. Horochowski, the family requests that donations be given to aid the Ukrainian people in their time of need. Monetary donations or first aid supplies and nonperishable food items can be sent/taken to the Word of Life Evangelical Christian Church, 3851 S. Park Avenue, Sedalia, MO marked “Ukrainian Relief”.
