1930 — 2020
Robert Johnston died five days after his 90th birthday on Dec. 8, having successfully lived with several illnesses for many years. He was born in Oakland, the elder son of John and Louise Johnston.
After graduating from Piedmont high school in Oakland, he enlisted in the U.S. Airforce and then the Air Force Reserve. He was honorably discharged in 1957 just in time for his marriage to Delorale (Doe) Johnston.
After receiving his master’s degree from UC Berkeley, Robert moved with his wife and young children to Vallejo where he began his teaching career in Physical education. A sport enthusiast, Robert coached basketball and was very involved in team sports. Soon after receiving his doctorate in education, he moved again, this time to Davis, arriving there in 1971. He spent the next 22 years as principal of Emerson Junior High and also Holmes Junior High, retiring in 1992. He was a dedicated teacher and administrator, much beloved by his colleagues for his quiet wisdom and supportive attitude.
He spent every summer and sometimes whole years near or in Yellowstone National Park. He worked there as a ranger in the summer months while he was teaching, living in the Lamar Valley. During retirement, he worked at concession stores in the park.
He built his dream cabin in Cooke City, Mont., to fulfill his love for the outdoors. Fly fishing was his favorite and he became very proficient. He loved sharing this time with as many friends and family as who could make the journey to Yellowstone.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Delorale Ann Proctor and his younger brother, Howard. He will be greatly missed by his son Clay with his wife Carol, his daughter Jill Murphy and his four grandchildren Jason and Jenna Tullis and Robert and Mark Murphy. He also leaves behind Edelgard Brunelle, his late-life companion of 10 years.
A memorial service in Cooke City, Mont., is planned for a to-be-determined summer date. Memorial contributions can be made to the donor’s favorite wildlife charity.
