If you’re looking for a great winter midge pattern with magical powers, Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions has got one for you. His Poison Tung is a variation on Charlie Craven’s Deep Blue Poison Tung. Flagler’s version is a bit smaller and offers more contrast between the white body and rib, but both patterns are based on the mystical, fish-attracting power of the color blue.
At the end of his video, Flagler explains how to fish the Poison Tung as the bottom fly on a tandem rig, a strategy that ever fly-fisher should be familiar with. So twist up some of these on tiny hooks, and then make larger, more nymph-live versions that feature some weight. The combination should be extremely effective.

Hook: 2X-short emerger hook (here, a Dai-Riki #125), size 22.
Bead: Silver Gray Killer Caddis glass bead, midge size.
Thread: White, 70-denier or 8/0.
Rib: Gun Metal Blue Ultra Wire, size X-SM.
Body: Tying thread.
Thorax: Light gray SLF Prism Dubbing.
