Moving to a new ski town can be exciting, challenging, and a bit scary at times.

New mountains, new people, new winding mountain roads, new friends, new lingo, new culture, and new ski shops.

I started spending time in Park City, UT in 2018.

After navigating the local mountains and culture a bit, I realized I needed a ski shop to get skis mounted and tuned and ski boots fitted and advice absorbed.

After tumbling through a few shops, I found one that could deliver it all at a high level:  Jans.

Marty & Bransford are boot-fitting ninjas.

Jared and the ski maintenance crew can tune and mount any ski or board.

I even saw them working on a crazy snow skate when I was there last.

And it doesn’t stop there.

Just this season, I barged into Jans with 3 pairs of new ski boots to be fitted and 5 pairs of skis to be mounted.

Jans saved me this season mounting up all my skis and punching out all my boots just before my 2-month trip to Alaska to heli-ski guide for my first season.

They didn’t hesitate, they knew exactly what to do, and they got it done on time.

They also do bikes! image: snowbrains

What’s really nuts are the rentals at Jans.

They rent our about damn near everything you could ever need in the mountains…

  • Fly Fishing Gear

Jans “Trade In-Trade Up” program for kids is a money-saver.

“When you buy a new kids’ skis, boots, and bindings package at Jans, we’ll give you a 30% discount. And when your child outgrows that gear, you can trade it in with your original receipt, and we’ll apply a 40% credit on the gear you are turning in for their new ski gear. We carry kids’ ski gear from K2 and Atomic. And our own little ones do all the necessary testing for us so you know your little shredders are skiing in the best!” – Jans

It doesn’t hurt that Jans backstory is fantastic.

The first ski shop in Utah!

Jan Peterson’s father founded Pete’s, the first ski shop in Utah, and Jan learned the business growing up. After years of ski racing and coaching, Jan decided to try his hand at his other avocation — writing — and became an advertising copywriter. While he was successful at it, Jan found he preferred casting a fly and talking about the latest ski equipment with customers to worrying about ad deadlines, so he returned to the outdoor industry.

In 1980, the same year that Deer Valley® opened, Jan started his own namesake shop not far from the location of the current Jans flagship store. Fortune smiled on the fledgling operation, and he soon opened more store locations.

Over the years, Jans has expanded from just a ski shop to also include mountain biking, road biking, fly fishing, and snowshoeing. Additionally, through an affiliation with White Pine Touring, Jans and jans.com are able to provide clients with Nordic skiing and alpine rock climbing.

One of the defining differences between Jans and other outdoor specialty stores in a resort town is that, while we have our share of youth and enthusiasm, the Jans staff includes many longtime industry Experts. When you’re looking for expertise that transcends what’s written in a manufacturers’ catalog, visit the Experts at Jans, or consult jans.com. You’ll often find many products featured in these catalogs were developed with the help of Jans Experts too!

If I need gear, rentals, advice, or guiding – I go to Jans.

It really is key for me to have a shop I can rely on and I can’t stress enough how enjoyable it is to walk into a shop full of good people and learn about the latest greatest gear out there.

Half the time I’ve spent in Jans I’ve just drifted around looking gear, asking questions, and hanging out.

Thanks, Jans.
