NAPLES, FL / CLINTON, NY — It is with the greatest sadness that the family of William N. Macartney, III, 79, of Naples, FL, and formerly of Clinton, NY, share with you his passing on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, with his loving family at his side after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born December 16, 1941, in Utica, NY, the son of William N. and Martha (Smith) Macartney, Jr., he graduated from Suffield Academy and continued his undergraduate studies at Washington & Jefferson College, where he earned his B.A. He then attended Cornell University and graduated from The Johnson School of Business in 1966 with his M.B.A.

Bill, affectionately known by his friends as “Mac”, joined Indium Corporation in 1967, where in 1970 he became President after purchasing the company from his father, William N. Macartney, Jr. Over the half century since then and under Bill’s leadership, Indium Corporation has grown from approximately 20 people to nearly 1,200 today, expanding from a single humble facility in Utica, NY, to fourteen modern and ever-growing facilities worldwide, all while tremendously expanding the company’s markets and product offerings. Until the time of his death, Bill served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company.

In addition, Bill thoroughly enjoyed the numerous boards on which he served and the opportunity they provided him to further engage in the various communities to which he was committed.

Many people in this world were gifted with Bill’s friendship, although Bill would say the opposite. His family, friends and community were the greatest source of joy and pride for Bill. For those who knew him, his joie de vivre, his ability to turn a phrase and share a joke was legendary. Bill was always there to share in times of happiness, through periods of grief, and certainly during celebratory milestones and accomplishments. Generous by nature, he always took it upon himself to lovingly care for his family as well as his friends, his company, his communities and pretty much anyone he knew.

Beyond his family, friends and business, his most favorite passion in life was golf where many lasting friendships began and continued throughout his life. He was a very talented amateur player, winning numerous clubs’ championships and invitational awards, including International competitions and events. If he wasn’t golfing, you would often find Bill sharing a glass of wine with friends or fly fishing somewhere in his beloved Adirondacks or in a mountain stream where in the wild and quiet, he found peace and joy.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Linda, whom he married on February 20, 1999; his adored children, William “Bill” N. Macartney, IV, of Reno, NV, Elizabeth “Libby” (James) M. Mitchell, of Mill Valley, CA (children of Bill and Barbara Wyckoff Soggs); beloved step-children, Kelle D. Wallace, of Naples, FL, and Jamie L. (Justin) Weiler, of Whitesboro, NY; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren, Neil and Piper Macartney, of Reno, NV, Cooper and Emerson Mitchell, of Mill Valley, CA and Olivia and Cameron Weiler, of Whitesboro, NY; two loving sisters, Barbara Ann (Olavi Hirvonen) Macartney of Canaan, NY, and Lola Troost, of Sarasota, FL; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a younger sister, Martha Macartney.
