Waldo “Wally” Todd, 85, of Gasport, NY, passed peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on January 1, 2021. Wally was born on July 29, 1935 in Margaretville, NY, son of the late David and Helen (Kelly) Todd.
He is survived by his older sister, Norma Kelly of PA; and predeceased by his older brother, Donald Todd.
He grew up in the Catskill Mountains around the town of Denver, NY. He attended Roxbury Central School, worked as a dairy farmer and logger, and joined the US Navy in 1955. He married his childhood sweetheart, Ellen Ballard, in May of 1958.
After his military discharge in 1959 they moved to Gasport, NY, that same year. He worked at Agway, the Lockport GM Plant, co-owned a bulk milk hauling business, Ackerson & Todd, and owned Todd’s Inn for 14 years located on Quaker Rd. outside Barker, NY. He also owned and operated W. Todd Trucking for seven years, working side-by-side with his son, David, and retired from Art Hill Excavating in Medina, NY.
He was a past Commander of the Barker American Legion, a member for 47 years and also a past member of the Barker Lions Club.
He enjoyed fly fishing, deer hunting, woodworking, snowmobiling, and meeting with his special Sunday football group. He played the fiddle, guitar, piano, and drums and performed with his father’s country band beginning at the young age of 12 years old. They played at large Catskill resort hotels as well as small local grange halls and taverns. He sponsored many fast pitch softball teams in the 1970’s and spent his last years with his dog, “Lil’ Baby Girl” Ruby. He was a great husband, father, and friend, and will be missed dearly.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ellen; and children, Sandra Todd (Michael) Bellman, David (Connie) Todd, Cynthia Todd (Bruce) and Wade (Melissa) Todd; grandchildren, Meagan, Todd, Brooke, Ellie, Davey, Addy, Hayden, Jake, Becky, Mitchell, Darlene, and Pablo; and great-grandchildren, Emma, Jazmyne, Alia, Emma, James, Luna, Lucy, Liam, Sadie, Carter, Dani, Charlotte, and Oakley.
The family will receive friends at the Sherrie Bream Funeral Home, 4521 Main St., Gasport, Friday from 5-8 PM. Family and friends are invited to attend his Graveside Service with Military Honors Saturday 11 AM in Hartland Cemetery. Please note that the funeral home will be operating at 33% capacity per state guidelines. NY requires those in attendance to adhere to social distancing guidelines and face covering are mandatory.
