Many anglers prefer to use a loop knot for streamers, and sometimes even nymphs. The theory is that the loop allows the fly to move more freely in the water, making it seem more lifelike to game fish. Lefty’s Loop is an easy-to-tie version that makes for a nice, small loop that can’t foul the fly during casting. Previously, Tim Flagler has shown us an ingenious way to tie this loop, using a mitten clamp or hemostat. Tim’s method works great if you’re dealing with cold hands or stiff line.
Since I find it helpful to see a knot tied several ways, here are two videos on Lefty’s Loop: one live-action, on the water video and one animation. Between the two, you’ll have an excellent sense not only of how the loop is constructed but of how your fingers can accomplish it.
