We talk a lot about tandem nymph rigs, in which a heavier fly is often used to get a lighter, smaller nymph down to where the fish are feeding. But it’s also useful to learn when to fish two dry flies at the same time. In this video, Tom Rosenbauer explains when you might want to fish a tandem dry rig, as well as how he likes to rig for it. Aside from giving the trout two menu items to choose from, a two-fly rig can also help you detect strikes when you’re casting small flies, especially in low light. For those of us of a certain age, whose eyes may not be as sharp as they use to be, and “indicator dry” above a Trico or a tiny BWO can be a life-saver.
