Here’s another installment in a series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video will teach a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.

In the third part of a new series on tube flies, Tim answers a common question: how do you secure the tube in your vise so you can tie on it, as you would a hook shank? As usual, there is more than one answer. If you plan on tying lots of tubes, you can invest in a special vise attachment, or you can use a metal mandrel that clamps securely in standard vise jaws.

A tapered mandrel allows you to secure the tube in standard vise jaws.
