Mending is such an important part of achieving a good dead drift that we have posted about many times here on the Orvis News Fly Fishing blog. (See here and here, for instance.) One of the difficult things about mending is moving the line after it has landed on the water, especially if you have an old or roughed-up fly line because these will become hydrophilic–“sticking” to the water.
To avoid this, in some cases, you can actually make the mend in the air, before the fly touches down. In this great video, Pete Kutzer of the Orvis Fly Fishing Schools, demonstrates a fascinating technique in which drawing a letter C or D in the air with the rod tip will produce a mend.
