In 2017, we launched a series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques,” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video teaches a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.

Handling soft hackles can be tricky, as the fibers are long and wiggly. In this video, Tim shows you how to prepare the feather for tie-in, how to sweep the fibers rearward, and then how to actually wrap the hackle around the hook shank. The result is a neat, even, sparse hackle that will make your flies look better to both the angler and the trout.
