A few years ago, we launched a series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video will teach a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.
Wrapping a single strand of, say, chenille on a hook to create a fly body can be frustrating enough, if the wraps don’t touch or the body comes out lumpy and uneven. When you add the complexity of multiple strands that have to be controlled during the wrapping process, it can drive a tier batty. But Tim Flagler has a ridiculously simple solution–instead of repositioning your thread at the front of the shank and wrapping the materials up to that point, wrap the materials behind the thread, using the tension of the handing bobbin to keep all the materials in place. As you’ll see in this video, the results are quite pleasing.
