Here’s the latest installment of our series of videos called “One-Minute Fly-Tying Tips and Techniques” from Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions. Each video teaches a single tying skill, from the most basic to the advanced. Ultimately, the series will serve as a sort of encyclopedia of tying skills that will be a valuable resource for anyone who sits down at a vise to create a fly.
Spun deer-hair makes for a dense, buoyant fly body, whether you’re tying a large, traditional Tap’s Bug or a size 12 Goddard Caddis. Once you’ve got the hair spun on the hook shank, it’s time to trim it to shape. This can be a slightly harrowing exercise because a slip of the scissors or razor can ruin the whole thing. You can’t add back on what you’ve cut off.
In this great video, Tim shows you all the ways that you can trim the hair to shape, using a variety of tools: straight and curved scissors, razor blades, and even a cauterizing tool. Having the right implements at your disposal will take a lot of the guesswork–and the anxiety–out of the trimming process.
