The Purple Haze–invented by Bitterroot guide Andy Carlson almost two decades ago–has become a staple pattern for many Western anglers. Six years ago, Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions showed us how to tie the standard version of the fly, but now he’s back to show us a flashier, more durable, and quicker-to-tie version. As he says in the video, tying purists may want to avert their eyes.
In today’s video, Tim walks you through the simple process of tying a Sparkle Purple Haze that takes all the fussiness out of the standard parachute post, and he simplifies the tail and hackle materials, as well. The real key is how he uses UV-cure resin instead of multiple thread wraps at two different points in the fly’s creation. But pay attention, and you’ll also learn better ways to tie-in hackle-fiber tails, choose the right amount of calftail for the post, and end up with a fly with very clean lines.
Speedy Sparkle Purple Haze
Hook: Standard dry-fly hook (here, a Lightning Strike DF1), sizes 12
to 18.
Thread: Black, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Tails: Coq de Leon fibers.
Wing post: White calf-body hair.
Adhesive #1: UV-cure resin.
Hackle: Barred ginger.
Body: Purple Ice Dub UV .
Head: Tying thread.
Adhesive #2: UV-cure resin.
