Here’s another “guide-fly” lesson from Alvin Dedeaux of All Water Guides. (Or, as he calls them, “super easy to tie, down and dirty, quick and easy, fish-catching guide flies.”) As Alvin says, he doesn’t want to create flies that are complicated or take a long time to tie because a client may throw it into the trees on their first cast. So he’s come up with variations on famous patterns that offer the same basic profile and motion in the water but are easier and faster to tie.
This is a pattern he uses for those times when redfish are being picky. He believes that all the deer hair makes the fly land more softly, and th subdued colors aren’t as startling. Alvin is very clear about the fact that he’s not concerned with everything being perfect and exact, as long as the final product has the general profile he wants. And, since he’s a full-time guide, he wouldn’t bother tying this pattern if it wasn’t a proven fish-catcher.
Redfish Gotcha
Hook: Heavy-wire saltwater hook (here a Tiemco 811s), size 2.
Thread: Pink, 3/0.
Eyes: Bead-chain eyes.
Tail: Tan bucktail.
Body: Brown dubbing.
Wing: Tan bucktail.
Head: Pink thread.
Note: Tie this pattern in any colors and combinations you want.
