The October caddis is one of the more exciting hatches of fall, and the big orange bugs can be seen along riverbanks for weeks this time of year. Previously, Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions has shown us how to tie a Soft-Hackle version, but this heavy, inverted nymph imitation will get down to fish holding in deeper water. If you’re employing European-style nymphing techniques, this is the perfect pattern for you, but it will also work simply drifted under an indicator.

October Caddis Euro Nymph
Hook: Barbless jig hook (here, a Lightning Strike JF2), size 12.
Bead: Black tungsten bead, 5/32″.
Weight: Lead-free round wire, .020.
Thread: Fluorescent orange, 6/0 or 140-denier.
Rib: Gold Ultra Wire, brassie size.
Abdomen: Amber Flexi Floss.
Collar: Chocolate brown SLF Prism Dubbing.
Hotspot: Tying thread.
Adhesive: Head cement.
Tools: Plunger-style hackle pliers, bodkin, needle nose pliers.
