This week’s video from Tightline Productions shows you how to tie one of Tim Flagler’s “guilty pleasure” patterns, an Isonychia Parachute. Previously, Tim has featured a similar pattern tied by author and blogger Matt Grobert, and it’s interesting to compare the two.
As usual, Tim shows off a few tricks–for example, using two stackers and stripping the hackle butt before tie-in–that will make tying the pattern simpler, but the piece de resistance is the way he repositions the hook in the vise before tying in and wrapping the hackle. This may change the way you tie all parachute flies.
Isonychia Parachute
Hook: Standard dry-fly hook (here, a Lightning Strike DF1), size 12.
Thread: Wine, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Tails: Moose body hair.
Post: Light gray polypropylene yarn.
Body: Isoychia Fine & Dry dubbing.
Hackle: Medium dun hackle.
Tools: Large and small hair stackers.
