The original Chubby Chernobyl–which Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions showed us how to tie here–was born on Utah’s Green River and is one of Tom Rosenbauer’s favorite dry flies for small-stream brook-trout fishing. But if you’re looking for something a little smaller and easier to tie, then perhaps the Half Chubby is just the ticket.
In his latest how-to video, Tim Flagler shows you how to create this smaller cousin of the Chubby Chernobyl, using a jig hook and some 2mm foam. As usual, he has some great tips for preparing and tying in each material for maximum efficiency and ease. The end result is a cool little pattern that will certainly draw strikes from a wide variety of species–from trout to bass and panfish.
Half Chubby Chernobyl
Hook: Angled-eye jig hook (here a Lightning Strike JF2), size 10.
Thread: Purple, 6/0 or 140-denier.
Tails: UV Tan Krystal Flash.
Underbody: UV Purple Ice Dub.
Body: Purple craft foam, 2mm.
Abdomen: UV Purple Ice Dub.
Adhesive #1: Superglue.
Legs: Purple barred round-rubber legs or Sili Legs, medium.
Wing: White polypropylene floating yarn.
Thorax: UV Purple Ice Dub.
Adhesive #2: Head cement.
Tools: Foam cutter by River Road Creations, bodkin, whip-finisher.
Note: Tie this pattern in a variety of colors to imitate beetles, grasshoppers, damselflies, or whatever other trout food you think trout will love.
